Microsoft Office 365:Back to School Necessity?

Officials in NYC recently announced their plan to offer free downloads of Microsoft’s office software to all City University, CUNY, students.

The deal was a collaboration between the City Council, Microsoft Corporation and the City University of New York. Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus will be provided to over 400,000 full and part-time students; the software includes MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. In comparison, a normal four-year subscription to the software package for college students would cost $79.99. CUNY students can download the software, available now on CUNY’s website, on up to five personal devices.

The effort will expand access to tech education, putting New York students at a greater advantage to learn the technical skills to be successful in business as well as the global workforce. To learn more about the goals of the initiative, visit here.

Google’s New Wireless Service:Project Fi

Google recently unveiled their much anticipated phone service, named Project Fi. This wireless service puts Google in competition with Verizon, AT&T and others already known in the phone service space.

Project Fi, only available to uers of Google’s Nexus 6 phone, attempts to blend several communication tools, like cellular calls and online calls, into a single phone number and service. Google has teamed with Sprint and T-Mobile to offer the traditional wireless service, but they also mix in wireless hot spots for the service, like those you would find and connect to at the airport or in a Starbucks coffee shop. This means that whenever connected to Wi-Fi, your phone would allow you to do anything you would normally do, and when you leave the Wi-Fi area, it will automatically and seamlessly transition to the traditional cell service. The service will also connect your phone number and service to other devices like your tablet or laptop.

The service pricing seems cheap for now at $20/month for basic voice and text service, and an extra $10 per gigabyte of cellular data. While hard to predict your usage, you only pay for what you use so you can end up with a credit at the end of the month.
